Attend the 2011 Becky Galentine Memorial Tournament

Dear Colleagues,

The Washington Debate Coalition (WDC) and the University of Washington Department of Communication (UWDoC) are proud to announce the third annual Becky Galentine Memorial Tournament. Becky Galentine was an ardent supporter of Washington debate, coach at Whitman College, and founder of the Seattle Debate Foundation. The Tournament is intended to support Becky's dream of creating opportunities for high school and college students to participate in debate and involve the University of Washington in such efforts.

Due to Renton’s move to Thursday and last year’s low enrollment, we will not host a separate round robin this year, only the Friday and Saturday Tournament.

Join us for dinner and drinks after the tournament, Saturday, December 3rd at 8pm.

TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW

The Tournament will take place at the University of Washington on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. We are pleased to offer:

open and novice Policy, Lincoln-Douglas (double-flighted), and Public Forum debate (double-flighted), Student Congress, and Individual Events,

beautiful setting and world class facilities,

an excellent tournament and tabulation staff,

high quality competition,

national caliber judging, and

top notch hospitality.

SCHEDULE

Please note that due to space and schedule constraints, debate rounds and individual events rounds will overlap on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Students may double enter in debate and individual events if they so desire but the Tournament is unfortunately unable to make accommodations to ensure that they can participate in both rounds.

All entries will occur through http://www.forensicstournament.net. Any questions about the entries, fees, or similar issues should be directed to info@washingtondebate.org.

TOURNAMENT JUDGING

Each Policy team, LD team, and Public Forum team is required to provide a 1/2 judge. Each Student Congress and Individual Events entry must provide a 1/6 judge.

Judges cannot cover concurrent events.

Each uncovered debate team will incur judge fees as follows:

Policy

$100

Lincoln-Douglas

$75

Public Forum

$75

Each uncovered slot will incur judge fees as follows:

Student Congress

$15

Individual Events

$15

If you know in advance that you will not be able to cover your judge commitment, please let us know. We will not have a large number of standby judges on hand and notifying us of judge issues ahead of time will help the tournament run much more smoothly. We also request that you bring qualified judges with judging experience.

* Judge no shows in any event will incur a $25 per round penalty.*

TOURNAMENT DISCLOSURE POLICY

Judges are expected to disclose and explain their decisions and encouraged to provide written comments on their ballots. Typed ballots should be returned to info@washingtondebate.org no later than 1 hour after the end of the round. Judges should turn in their ballots before disclosing their decisions in order to keep the tournament on time.

TOURNAMENT FEES

There are no school fees for this tournament.

Entry fees will be:

$40 per Policy team

$30 per Lincoln-Douglas entry

$25 per Public Forum team

$15 per Student Congress entry

$10 per Individual Events entry

All checks should be made payable to the “Washington Debate Coalition.”

TOURNAMENT MEALS

Ordinarily, the Husky Union Building (HUB) provides a convenient place for coaches, students, and judges to congregate and get food. However, the HUB is currently under construction.

Students are encouraged to visit the cafes in the graduate and undergraduate libraries, Red Square, and University Avenue to acquire food and beverages. While these locations are relatively close to rounds, please make sure to keep an eye on the clock and get to rounds on time.

PARKING

Parking in the University District can be difficult. We suggest that you drop your students off at the Padelford Parking Lot across from the Communication Building on Campus and either park in the Padelford Parking Lot ($15 per day) or park in the University District and walk to campus. Parking in the University District is approximately $6-8 per day. A map of nearby parking will be posted at http://www.washingtondebate.org closer to the event.

HOTELS

The tournament hotel is the Hotel Deca at 4507 Brooklyn Ave NE, Seattle, WA, 98105, 1-800-899-0251, which is within walking distance of the Tournament. Please request the block under the name “Washington Debate Coalition.” We have negotiated a flat rate this year, of $109 for 1-4 persons, including parking and wireless internet. The hotel block expires on November 15, 2011.

We have chosen to only recommend the Hotel Deca because even those hotels in the area that are slightly less expensive are logistically inconvenient. If you are looking for cheaper rates, we suggest looking on Expedia for hotels in North Seattle, SeaTac, of Lynnwood. Expect a 20-30 minute commute plus parking time for these hotels.

Please direct any questions or comments to info@washingtondebate.org, Anjali Vats at 404.822.6793 or Margeaux Lippman at 917.697.0763.

We hope to see you in December!

TOURNAMENT MEALS

Ordinarily, the Husky Union Building (HUB) provides a convenient place for coaches, students, and judges to congregate and get food. However, the HUB is currently under construction and, as a result, concessions will be available at the tournament.

Concessions, provided by Puyallup High School, will be available for lunch on Friday and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday. If you choose not to take advantage of these concessions please be conscious of the schedule for the tournament.

We will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions (e.g. vegetarian, vegan, gluten free). Please contact Sarah Sherry at sherrysm@puyallup.k12.wa.us to indicate any special restrictions so that we can ensure that appropriate meals are available.

A map of nearby parking will be posted at www.washingtondebate.org closer to the event.

HOTELS

The tournament hotel is the Hotel Deca at 4507 Brooklyn Ave NE, Seattle, WA, 98105, 1-800-899-0251. The Hotel Deca is within walking distance of the tournament. We have reserved a block of rooms under the name "Washington Debate Coalition." The rate is $89 for double occupancy and $10 for each additional person up to 4 people.
Parking at the Hotel Deca is $8 per day.

We have chosen to only recommend the Hotel Deca because even those hotels in the area that are slightly cheaper are logistically inconvenient. If you are looking for cheaper rates, we suggest looking on Expedia for hotels in SeaTac or Lynnwood. Expect a 20-30 minute commute plus parking time for these hotels.

Please direct any questions or comments to info@washingtondebate.org or contact Anjali Vats at 404.822.6793.
We hope to see you in December!

Sincerely,

Congratulations to the Ingraham Debate Team and Coach Robby White on an amazing first season!

The Ingraham Debate Team finished out a fantastic season on Saturday at the Washington State Tournament. Ingraham qualified two teams, Liam Donnelly and Rebecca Phare, and Jamie Keene and Oakley Shelton-Thomas, despite starting its team just a few short months ago in September 2009. Donnelly and Phare, two freshmen, won three out of six debates, defeating a team from Mercer Island, while Keene and Shelton-Thomas, a sophomore and freshman, won two debates. One of Mercer Island's teams placed in the semi-finals and the second won the Washington State Tournament. Two other Ingraham team members, Aidan "Atreyu" Farr and Lauren Berry Kagan, attended the Washington State Tournament to watch debates and cheer on their teammates.

Coach Robby White, a Comparative History of Ideas major at the University of Washington, has been an excellent coach and leader for the team. He competed in policy debate for two years in college, where he learned many of the skills that allowed him to become such as successful high school coach. The WDC placed Robby with Ingraham because of his depth of debate knowledge, familiarity with the Washington debate community, and extraordinary ability to connect with his students. He continues to be one of the best young coaches and judges on the Washington debate circuit.

Ingraham had a number of other notable successes this year. Donnelly and Shelton-Thomas placed 3rd at their first tournament in high school debate, the novice division of Tahoma High School's Golden Bear Classic. Donnelly was also 3rd Speaker. Donnelly and Shelton-Thomas won the novice division of the Auburn High School Tournament, beating out the established teams of Arlington High School, Holy Names, and South Eugene High School. Donnelly was once again 3rd Speaker. Ingraham went on to close out the Finals of the junior division of the University of Puget Sound Debate Tournament, with all four debaters placing in the top ten speakers.

Despite only being in their first year of competition, Shelton-Thomas and Keene were semi-finalists, out of 22 teams, in the open division at Mt. Vernon High School. Both Ingraham teams placed in the top four, out of 47 teams, including juniors and seniors, at the Pacific Lutheran University Tournament. Keene was 2nd Speaker, Donnelly was 4th Speaker, and Phare was 6th Speaker.

For a complete list of Ingraham's achievements, regular updates, and a team roster, check out the team's Facebook page.

The WDC could not be more proud of its flagship program. We look forward to reporting next year's successes. Congratulations to the Ingraham Debate Team and Robby!

Many of you have indicated that you wish to enter teams
in the first annual Becky Galentine Memorial Round Robin to be held at
the University of Washington on December 2-3.

If you could please fill out the following questionnaire to confirm
your entry and provide us with information to facilitate final
arrangements for the tournament, we would greatly appreciate it. Some
of the information may be a bit redundant with information that you've
already sent but we'd just like to make sure we have everything
correct.

Drops after NOVEMBER 30 do not reduce your fees.

Also, please remember that there is NO EXCEPTION to the rule that each
school must be accompanied by a school-approved supervisor. Please
email me if you need clarification on that WIAA rule or predict that
you will have difficulty meeting that rule.

For your information, we currently have 12 teams entered in policy
(Bellingham, Mt. Vernon, S. Eugene (2), Arlington, Mercer Island (2),
St. George's, Puyallup, Ingraham (2), Eagle), 10 teams entered in LD
(Lakes HS, Kingston HS, Lake Oswego HS, Tahoma (2), Mercer Island,
Bainbridge, Gig Harbor (2), Emerald) and 5 teams entered in public
forum (Puyallup (2), Brainchild (2), Emerald).

If you need details directions or any assistance, please don't
hesitate to email Anjali Vats at anjali@washingtondebate.org.

Thanks so much and we can't wait to see you!

with an * and event for each team or individual)

(2) Name of School-Approved Supervisor

(3) Total Number of Banquet Attendees (Please indicate the number of

(4) Name of Judge and Preferred Event(s)

(5) Restrictions/Requests on Judge Time

(6) Judge Preclusions, if any

(7) Parking and Evidence Storage

For those of you staying at the Hotel Deca, parking is included in
your hotel rate. The hotel is a 10-15 minute walk from the tournament
and the banquet but please do remember your raincoats and umbrellas!

For those of you commuting to the tournament, a variety of parking
options are available. Parking on campus, directly across the street
from the Communication Building (Padelford Parking Garage), is $15 a
day (not included in entry fee). Free street parking is sometimes
available a 10-15 minute walk from the campus. Various other parking
options are available for fees of approximately $5-10.

If you are not parking on campus, we recommend that you allow at least
1/2 hour for drop off and parking as the UW campus is located in a
busy metropolitan area. Using the following map:

http://www.washington.edu/home/maps/northcentral.html?CMU

Enter the campus from MEMORIAL WAY (K-2) and proceed to the PADELFORD
PARKING GARAGE for drop off (P-8). You do not have to stop at Gate 2
when entering campus unless you are parking in the Padelford Parking
Garage. To park off campus, exit via Memorial Way and make a left on
45th St for street parking and parking lots. The Hotel Deca is at
45th and University Ave. approximately 2 1/2 blocks from Memorial Way.

Please let us know if you would like campus parking so we can secure
it in advance. Alternately, if you would like directions for cheaper
parking in the University District, please let us know as well.

Evidence storage will be in the Communication Building on Wednesday
night. If you foresee difficulty getting your evidence to the campus,
please contact me and we can discuss options for evidence shuttling.

I just wanted to give you an update about all of the great features of
the round robin:

the Gonzaga Debate Institute or the Whitman National Debate
Institute and/or college scholarships of $500 to the University of
Puget Sound;

included in the entry fee;

A post-tournament judge and alumni gathering (over 21 only) will
be held at the District Lounge after the banquet;

Students will have the unique opportunity to get to know one
another, college coaches in the region, and compete in excellent,
highly educational debate rounds with professional and top notch
